I’m always curious about people’s writing process. How do you write?
I don’t usually do much of an outline, but sometimes I do write down a generally idea of where I want the book to end up. My characters often change those ideas, too.
Lately, I’ve mostly started out by writing my rough draft by hand on a legal pad. I have also written the rough draft on either my laptop or my Alphasmart Neo (named Alfie), but I prefer writing by hand when I can because I have an easier time doing my first edit as I type the story up.
When I do research either on the topic I am writing about, or on writing in general, I have used Evernote before. I do really like Evernote. When I read a book for research, I most often use a notebook and pen to write down my notes. Although I just started a box of index cards today, so I’ll probably start using that instead.
After the first draft is written, I type it up on Microsoft Word, then print it off and read through the manuscript with a red pen, notebook, and pencil. If I find a place I want to add something, I mark it with the pen, and write the added scene out in the notebook. Any further edits, I usually read and mark directly on the computer.
What excites you the most, beginning/middle/end? Why?
I think they all excite me for different reasons. The beginning because I’m starting a new book, the middle because it is the part where the most happens, and the end because it means I’m closer to being ready to publish the book.
What do you feel is the hardest part about finishing your project and readying them for publication?
Making sure all the historical details are accurate would definitely be the hardest part of finishing a writing project. Editing and proofing to make sure that there are very few, if any, typos is the hardest for publication.
What puts you in a writing mood? Do you listen to music or enjoy total and complete silence while writing?
Music! I don’t eat junk food, drink coffee (I know, I’m weird), or smoke. But music is almost a necessity for writing. I have done some writing without music, but I think better when there is music.
Where do complete most of your writing?
In my bedroom which is also basically my “office.” When I’m writing by hand, a lot of my writing is done on my bed, stretched out on my stomach. Very comfortable. 🙂

Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. Now that she’s grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn’t stop her from trying.
When she isn’t writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, writing, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana someday to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.
